OGF welcomed UPLB Professors I.V. Gomez, Beth Beltran and Mener Maniago together with 23 UPLB Students of Class ANSC 137 Cheese Technology last September 20, 2010 at Oyibos’ farm in Lian, Batangas.
Highlights of the tour were the visit to our 4 goathouses (GHs) were our Saanen and Nubian goats were housed on elevated pens. Sir Mener was amazed on the sanitation in the area and the absence of flies and goaty odor at the GHs. It was a tribute to the hard-work being exerted by all of our farmhands. The main reason – ‘No to Chemicals – Yes to Natural Control.’
The guests were also shown the production of our feed concentrate, a concoction of the freshest ingredients. Mam Beth noticed the unusually fragrant smell of the concentrate. Our goats do love it. We explained that so far we have not had any incident of bloat as the feeding regime is pretty much controlled be it during the rainy or dry season.
The group was also presented with the actual demonstration of milking a goat in our improvised milking stand. Plans are now in place and just awaiting the onset of the dry season to develop our permanent milking parlor and milk room in preparation for our planned milk production in 2011.
Ms. I.V. and Ms. Beth were happy to see our forage garden of indigofera, rensoni, flamengia, madre de agua, calopo, centrosema, napier, etc. We pointed out that it is still very much work in progress and we are now preparing for the next dry spell. Oyibos’ plan is to be fully organic in 2 years time. We are already using organic herbicide and fertilizer using our very own produce.
The students were particularly impressed of how friendly and inquisitive the goats were. We hope at least one of the students do venture into goat farming when they do graduate.
During lunch the group was served with milk-o-gel freshly made from our goat milk.
In the end, it was a happy farewell for everybody as our guests especially the students not only received valuable insights on goat dairy production but also received souvenir goat milk soap, another wonderful produce from our wonderful goats.
We at Oyibos were very fortunate to have received unsolicited advice from our experts. These are valuable knowledge gained ‘free of charge.’ Maraming pong salamat, Mams I.V. and Beth at kay Sir Mener.
To everybody who visited, it was indeed a pleasure. And we hope to see you again. Mabuhay po kayo.
